Edward Rocklin, Professor of English,California State University Pomona. "Improbably produced or unperfectly represented": Exploring Tensions at the End of Measure for Measure. Slightly over four-hundred years after its first performance, whenever we attend a performance of Measure for Measure we watch a play whose final details we cannot predict, and whose genre we may need to rethink. That is to say, despite the fact that everyone in a first night audience might know the text of this play, no one in that audience can be sure of exactly how the performance will conclude. In this presentation, Professor Edward Rocklin will explore how productions since 1950 have taken advantage of the text’s open silences to produce a remarkable array of closing harmonies and disharmonies.

The King of Navarre has determined that his kingdom will become known as a court of knowledge, a “wonder of the world.” He and his three companions swear off food, sleep, and women for three years so that they may become scholars. Immediately after taking this oath, the Princess of France arrives with her three companions. The men don’t admit — even to each other — that they have instantly fallen in love, but the women know, and they also know about the oaths. The women delight in teasing the men, who eventually discover each other’s secret passion. The men unite and are determined to outsmart the women. Then the games begin!
