Shakespeare Speaker Series Guest 2 - Louis Fantasia

Shakespeare Speaker Series Guest 2
"King Lear or Survivor - Tragedy in The Age of Oprah"
Sunday, April 27  2pm

The Long Beach Shakespeare Company will present King Lear at the Richard Goad Theatre from May 30th to June 21st, 2014. This play is often considered Shakespeare's crowning achievement. In celebration of the 450th Anniversary of Shakespeare's birth, what better way to honor the Bard than to produce this epic play?

In an engaging presentation, designed for new-comers to and veteran fans of Shakespeare and King Lear, Louis Fantasia will discuss why tragedy, and King Lear in particular, needs no "updating" or "re-imagining" for contemporary audiences. What it has to say about individual choice, relationships, love, shame, and behavior resonates as deeply today as when it was written...and is, perhaps, more needed in this time, when our lives are so influenced by television and pop culture.

Louis Fantasia was heard regularly on NPR as a theatre critic and arts commentator. His book, Instant Shakespeare, is published in the U.S. by Ivan R. Dee and by A & C Black in England. His recently finished second book, Tragedy in the Age of Oprah,  about the relationship between classical tragedy and popular culture is published by Scarecrow Press. He is currently at work on Talking Shakespeare, a collection of essays on Shakespeare's plays.
